Miam getting too serious?

Well ever since The Last Song we've seen Miam getting closer and improving their relationship, until they accepted being boyfriend & girlfriend. But now they seem pretty serious about their relationship, just what Miley needed, someone who make her happy and have a nice chemistry, respect and love,. And Liam seems to be the perfect guy for her right now., someone who would help her, and make her feel good,
Liam said they were pretty serious and Miley seems giving everything for him, And make this work out .

Miley KCA 2010

First of all Miley looked pretty, just keeping it casual. Wearing leather pants and a loose white blouse. Wonder why she wasn't at the Red carpet. However she looked good, even tho i thnk Selena this time looked better, Did you like her outfit?

Let's talk JEMI

Jemi looking stunning on their first public appearance on a red carpet as a couple. They looked comfortable, in love and they were having fun and just enjoying the moment.
As Demi said, it was time to stop hiding, And next to them Kevin Jonas with his beautiful wife, Danielle Jonas, looking pretty and fresh, just the right thing,
Now moving on, do you think Jemi is just publicity for Make a Wave and Camp rock 2?
this is what i think, they may be a little coinsidences, ya know? Just when Make a Wave is out and Camp rock is about to come out, they admit they are dating, The Jonas brothers never liked making public a relationship, until it was over., like nick with miley or selena, and Joe with Taylor and Camilla, why now? why to open up and admit they are dating, and not being afraid of going out together holding hands... yeah it might be a casuality. But on the other hand, they've always had that 'spark', ever since camp rock, they've always been best friends, we've seen them together a lot of times, they have a great relationship, even as best friends, They are like family in that sense. So it wouldn't surprise me they are dating, I've always thought they had something going on over there, more than just a friendship. But what do you think? do you thnk they are in fact dating, and are in love, or just PR stunt?
However I would expect they last. They seem having a good time and going wherever the flow takes them.

Demi KCA 2010

Demi looking natural and confident in a sexy black dress, joined by her famous good looking boyfriend, Joe Jonas and the other Jonases. All looking radiant and with a beautiful girl, except for nick, who went solo.

Selena Gomez KCA 2010

Selena Gomez looking beautiful in a yellow Cota dress, she looked young, pretty and really fresh. I think no one had ever done the hair that way as selena, it was original and better than the last year, I think this is one of the best looks of Selena so far. What do you think?

Miley Cyrus to concentrate on movies -Quits music

Miley Cyrus’s ardent followers were really disappointed after hearing the news that she will be quitting her singing profession in exchange for acting.

Cyrus is recently working for her upcoming movie The Last Song and is excited to enter the glitzy profession as an actress full time. She mentioned that her recent album will be released in the month of June and would be her last album as a singer. After that she will be full-fledged into acting.

Last year, Cyrus had announced while quitting her show, Hannah Montana that “she had grown out” of the role she had played since she was 12 years old.

The fourth and last music album for Cyrus would be ‘I Can’t Be Tamed’.

Mardi Gras Indians: can cultural appropriation occur on the margins?

Last week, the New York Times published a really interesting article concerning Mardi Gras Indians, specifically looking at the possibility of  the "Indians" copyrighting their costumes so their images can't be used in things like calendars, promotional materials, etc, without their consent. I'll get to that issue in a second post, but I think the entire concept of Mardi Gras Indians deserves a deeper look.

Let's look at the 'culture' of the Mardi Gras Indians, independent of history and context (something the anthropologist in me cringes at, but work with me), then we'll backtrack a bit.

These men and women call themselves "Indians." They are members of "tribes," with names like "Yellow Pocahontas," "Geronimo Hunters," and "Flaming Arrows" (a complete list of the tribes is here). They wear over-the-top, elaborate costumes based (very) loosely on American Indian powwow regalia--with headdresses, feathers, and beading (there is a slideshow on nytimes.com that can be found here):

(image via nytimes.com)

They have an anthem called "Indian Red" whose lyrics include:

I've got a Big Chief, Big Chief, Big Chief of the Nation
Wild, wild creation

He won't bow down, down on the ground
Oh how I love to hear him call Indian Red

When I throw my net in the river
I will take only what I need
Just enough for me and my lover

Objectively, out of context, this is by-definition cultural appropriation. Imagine if these were white men and women. I should be offended...right?

But it's complicated. The history of Mardi Gras Indians comes out of a history of shared oppression and marginality between the Black and Native residents, or some stories point to a desire to honor Native communities who took in escaped slaves. Wikipedia (again, the academic cringes, ha.) notes, of the history:
Mardi Gras Indians have been parading in New Orleans at least since the mid-19th century, possibly before. The tradition was said to have originated from an affinity between Africans and Indians as minorities within the dominant culture, and blacks' circumventing some of the worst racial segregation; laws by representing themselves as Indians. There is also the story that the tradition began as an African American tribute to American Indians who helped runaway slaves.
I still see some problems with that, the "honoring" argument is what many proponents of Indian mascots use, but what it boils down to, for me, is the question:

Can one marginalized group appropriate another?

Inherent in the concept of cultural appropriation is the notion of power. The group in power takes cultural aspects of a subordinate community out of context and uses them how they see fit. These Mardi Gras Indians are African American, and arguably at the lowest economic strata of society (the nytimes article talks about copyrighting as a means to recoup money for these performers). They are by no means in a position of power over Native communities in Louisiana or elsewhere. The Mardi Gras Indian culture does not appear to come out of a desire to "play Indian", and in many ways, it has moved outside of the realm of cultural appropriation into a distinct culture and community of it's own. But above all, it seems the history comes not out of a relationship of power, but out of a shared position of marginality and discrimination.

So, in this sense, I find it hard to write my usual rant on an insensitive appropriation of Native culture, but, on the other hand, it still makes me uncomfortable.

Thoughts?

(thanks for sticking with me, I know that was a long one)

Miley Cyrus to appears on The Ellen DeGeneres Show -31stmarch

We're still not over Miley Cyrus' weird hair-flinging - or convulsions, as Zap2It put it - during her song on last night's American Idol, (please head to the Lifeline Live FORUM to tell me I'm not alone in this) - but ... onward.

The pop star appears on The Ellen DeGeneres Show next week on Wednesday, March 31st, and Ellen gives her two bikes? Why? Because Ellen says she has seen Miley riding her bike with new boyfriend Liam Hemsworth.

Miley tells Ellen the chemistry with Liam when they first started filming The Last Song was "kind of awkward. We were both like, I liked him a little bit, he liked me a little bit, but it was awkward. Then I was like, 'Ok, just fake it. Please just pretend you like me,' and he was like, 'I don't have to pretend. I really do like you.' Ok, you're going to be my boyfriend cool. ... I was like, 'Good,' and we've been together for 10 months now and I'm really happy."

Actress Shruti Hassan biography

Actress Shruti Hassan biography
Actress Shruti Hassan biographyShruti Hassan Biography: Shruti Haasan is an Indian singer turned actress. Her parents are the noted actors, Kamal Haasan and Sarika.

Early career
Shruti Rajalakshmi Haasan was born to actors Kamal Haasan and Sarika on January 28, 1986 in Chennai, India. She also has a younger sister named Akshara, who represents India nationally for Ballroom Latin dancing. Haasan studied at the Lady Andal in Chennai, until 10th grade, when she moved to Mumbai to read psychology at St Andrew’s College.

However, Haasan shifted her focus to cinema and music, and eventually travelled to the USA to continue to learn music at the Musicians Institute in California, before returning to Chennai.

Singing
Shruti Haasan sang her first song aged just six in her father's Thevar Magan in the composition of Ilaiyaraaja. Later while pursuing her studies in school, Haasan made her singing debut in the Hindi language film, Chachi 420, singing a duet performing for the voice of a child, with her father Kamal Haasan, who also directed the film. Shruti Haasan's second song came in Hey Ram, where she sang the bilingual versions of the title theme, Rama Rama with her father, in Hindi and in Tamil. The album from Ilayaraaja, which was critically praised, won Haasan accolades for her efforts with reviewers, Screen India praising that she "has the makings of a good singer, and with some training she should go great guns".

Shruti Haasan, has most recently sung in a Tamil film, for Gautham Menon's Vaaranam Aayiram under the composition of Harris Jayaraj. As of November 2008, Haasan is also midway through her untitled debut album, which she has composed, written and sung, and is set for release in mid-2009.

Acting
After pursuing a career in singing, Shruti Haasan branched out a career into modelling. She started by starring appearing in the Frappe! magazine version of September 2007, since then she has gone on to appear in Verve.

In 2000, Haasan made her cinematic debut in the Tamil and Hindi bilingual film, Hey Ram, directed by her father. She made a cameo appearance as the daughter of Vallabhai Patel in the biopic of Mahatma Gandhi.

After rejecting prominent film offers, most notably the lead role in Venkat Prabhu's Saroja, reports suggested in late 2007 that Haasan was set to make her full debut as a heroine in 2008 with a movie opposite Madhavan directed by Nishikanth Kamath. Despite Madhavan admitting that the news "was premature", she signed up to the film, which was titled, Endrendrum Punnagai, only to be stalled prior to production. Eventually Haasan signed up to Soham Shah's Luck opposite Imran Khan, a Bollywood film.

Music composing
After much speculation, Shruti Haasan was confirmed as the music composer for the upcoming Tamil film Unnaipol Oruvan, with lead role played by her father Kamal Haasan who is also co-producer of the movie under Rajkamal International. The bilingual, is a remake of the successful Hindi film, A Wednesday!, but the soundtracks of both the projects are entirely separate.

Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth were cycling

... to the local 7-Eleven in Toluca Lake, California. 'The Last Song' co-stars (and real life couple) were spotted riding

their bikes to the convenience store.

Apparently, Miley Cyrus got upset with a paparazzo and stopped to confront him (see thumbnail below). He must have said

something really out-of-line for her to confront him.

Billy Ray Cyrus waited for Miley and Liam Hemsworth in the 7-Eleven parking lot. I guess they figured riding their bikes

one way was enough (or they decided they'd had enough of the paparazzi :).

Random Appropriation of the Day!

Via my friend Allison's friend Kip--taken in Versailles, France. If you can't tell, the orange peel is wearing a headdress, and the flavor is called "Indien" (you can click to make it bigger). It's flavored with grenadine, which gives it the pinkish-red color. I was sitting here, trying to figure out the connection between grenadine and Indians--like were pomegranates indigenous to the New World or something? But grenadine is a French word!

Then my friend was like "duh Adrienne, they called it Indian because it's RED."

Sometimes, I guess I forget that not everything requires deep analysis and interpretation. Sometimes, it's just straight up racist. Insensitivity ftw!

Also, if anyone out there speaks French and I'm missing something, please let me know.

Random Appropriation of the Day! Dreamcatcher=all inclusive Native traditions

I remember seeing this sign at the entrance to the campus health center, and raising my eyebrows at the randomness and hypocrisy of it all, but only when Leon sent it over, did I start to realize how straight-up nonsensical it is.

I am, of course, referring to that dream catcher.

I would assume that we're supposed to believe that these are all "Healing Traditions" supported by the health center--but honestly, can we put massage and chicken soup on the same level as Native spiritual traditions? And how is a dreamcatcher representative of healing/medicine in any Native community?

And as Leon pointed out: "not sure when Vaden has ever incorporated "Native healing traditions" in its services, much less, helped a Native out before...but apparently they like to say they do." I don't think anyone would argue that Vaden is anything less than a western-style medical facility, and I know the Native community has come up against some issues there, especially in the mental health services. Not exactly incorporating Native healing traditions.

I can just picture the meeting where they were developing this campaign: "so we've got the Eastern traditions represented with a buddah and some non descript written asian characters...we should throw something Native American up there. ideas?" "what about a dream catcher? that's Indian!"

Overall, just a weird, silly, way for them to proclaim understanding and multiculturalism by relying on a ubiquitous stereotype.

Tribal Fashion Roundup!

I've gotten a few tips this week about more tribal fashion appropriations, so I thought I would compile a few of them into a single post, because let's be honest, I'm a little lazy this week.

I found the image above thanks to Lanova posting my hipster headdress piece on a blog that "loved" this headdress (thanks girl!). It's from Coyote Pheonix's Etsy shop, and the description reads:
Great piece for burningman or other festivals. Looks great as a decoration piece hanging on the wall as well. Ties at the base of the neck like a headband with leather strap.
Also, one of the tags on the headdress is "shaman". Ok, appropriations aside, are there actually people out there who see this, swoon, and say "I must have this! my life is not complete until I have a dead coyote to wear on my head!". But, I guess, considering 14% of this fine nation thinks President Obama is, in fact, the Antichrist, I wouldn't be surprised that such people exist (related? not at all. but I just read these poll results, so...).

This one comes from my sister's fabulous suitemate Kathleen:

Belt and keychains from Jack Spade in Soho, website here. These seem pretty out of place with the whole Jack Spade asthetic, to me anyway. They're known for their preppy men's bags and accessories, with military inspirations and "timeless" pieces. Not usually what we'd associate with the Native trends. interesting.

Finally, a picture of a page from Lucky Magazine via my friend Genia (click to make it bigger):

The mocassins front and center are the Nicole Richie mocs I posted earlier, and there's a pendleton bag on the left. I love how Native American trends are "global"--um, you can't get more American than the styles of the original peoples in the US.

Just a few samples of many...I think I could start an entire blog of just Native Appropriations in fashion. sigh.

Nicole Richie Regrets over Tattoo

Nicole Richie says she now regrets having tattoos and piercings. Now that Nicole is a mother of two and has a more mature life, she regrets the wild mistakes from her youth. The wife of Joel Madden says she is embarrased by the scars on her body but aht she will keep her three tattoos - on her neck, her back and her foot.

She removed her belly button piercing when she was pregnant. She said that she is feeling more mature now and also more confident from her relationship with her husband and the love of her children. She doesn't need the confidence boost of tattoos on her skin to make her feel sexy and attractive. I believe her children will have a hard time convincing her to let them have a tattoo when they grow up.

Genius, Ben Stiller, Anson Williams

I listened to someone on public radio talking about genius. It's not just genetic, he said. People who are "geniuses", are driven to succeed. They are driven to improve their skills. They don't just do what they're already good at.

That's probably my problem. I never tried to improve. I was always driven to look as good as possible with what little ability I had.

I heard something else. An interview with Ben Stiller talking about his new movie in which he plays an angry imbittered 40-year-old whose life didn't go the way he wanted. So he's now hyper-critical of people who are more successful than him.

Anyway, I found some videos of Anson Williams singing on You Tube. At one time, I might have made fun of him. But now I don't want to be hyper-critical of people who are more successful than me.

mst3k on YouTube

There are lots of them. Lots of episodes. They're great! I love them! But...but...

I was lying in bed in the middle of the night, my laptop on the bed playing---which one was it? I don't remember.

I began experiencing mixed feelings about Mystery Science Theater 3000. But why? What was it?

I can't even remember what I was watching. It was the middle of the night.

Was it Joel or Mike?

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

This new movie is just coming out and it's not set in a tattoo shop in London or in Miami. It's set in a cold place with not much ink action!

The movie is bBased on the first book from the Millennium trilogy, by the Swedish journalist Stieg Larsson. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is set in Sweden. The film version has managed to cover most of the book's salient points which is very impressive.

The director of this thriller, Niels Arden Oplev, is taking us for a very unpleasant holiday in a very cold and dark Sweden and we are not dealing with beautiful blonde women but with serial killers and dirty family secrets. We start with the search for Harriet who went missing 40 years ago, aged 16. Her family wants to find the murderer but the investigation is slow and difficult until they get help from someone special - the girl with the dragon tattoo, Lisbeth (Noomi Rapace).

Don’t be put off by the black hair and piercings; she’s the one with the talent to find the truth. With the help from the girl with the dragon tattoo, we start to find out more about this sordid city which lead to the uncovering of a series of brutal murders. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is a great thriller and with enough suspense to make you want to know who the killer is, unless you have read the novel before.
