Fall 2011 Trends: A Sea of Blue and Green

At some point during New York Fashion Week, we got to talking about all the shades of greens and blue-ish greens walking the runways. We weren't - and still aren't - sure some of these shades are going to trickle down to the average woman's wardrobe. As we said when Michelle Obama donned it for St. Patrick's day, green isn't a particularly easy color to pull off, especially when the hues get very vivid. Well, as the old joke about Irish foreplay goes, brace yourself, Bridget, because you're going to be flooded with green on the racks.

Fall 2011 Collections

3.1 Phillip Lim, Anna Sui, Antonio Berardi, Aquilano.Rimondi

Badgley Mischka, Betsey Johnson, Blumarine, Burberry Prorsum

The first three are probably some of the wider-ranging shades in that a host of skin-colors can get away with it. The yellowy greens of the Aquilano.Rimondi and Burberry Prorsum looks tend to look good on the narrowest range of people. Those teal-bordering-on-turquoise looks also tend to have a wide range.

We really like the dustier tones in the Siriano and von Furstenberg looks.

Looking over all these pieces, we tend to respond most to shades that seem more subtle, less obvious to us. We love the colors of both the Malandrino and Marc by Marc Jacobs. Minty greens or kelly greens tend to bore us. We've always loved a green with a hint of blue or a blue with a hint of green. Every home we've lived in together had at least one room painted in a color that was a combination of blue and green.

We also like the combination of a distinct blue and green, like in the Marni look. That Mulberry is a bit much and the Oscar de la Renta is one instance where a minty green works for us, probably because of the high contrast with the black. We're not crazy about the shape of the Sonia Rykiel, but we love the color of the skirt.
